Perchlorate, bromate, and chlorate in hypochlorite solutions: Guidelines for utilities

چکیده

V arious forms of chlorine are commonly used in drinking water and water reuse applications for their ability to disinfect and maintain a residual level of disinfectant throughout the distribution system. The majority of utilities in the United States use chlorine gas during treatment, but approximately one third of all US drinking water treatment plants use bulk hypochlorite for disinfection, and around 8% use onsite hypochlorite generators or onsite generators (OSGs) during treatment (Routt et al, 2008a, 2008b). Hypochlorite solutions contain many regulated and unregulated contaminants, including bromate, chlorite, chlorate, and perchlorate (Asami et al, 2009; Greiner et al, 2008; Weinberg et al, 2003; Gordon et al, 1993). The perchlorate ion (referred to here as perchlorate) has been identified as a contaminant of concern in hypochlorite solutions and drinking water and has drawn much attention because it is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that can affect the human thyroid system (Greer et al, 2002; York et al, 2001; Urbansky, 2000; Lamm et al, 1999). Furthermore, on the basis of both data BENJAMIN D. STANFORD,

Structure and water exchange dynamics of hydrated oxo halo ions in aqueous solution using QMCF MD simulation, large angle X-ray scattering and EXAFS.

Theoretical ab initio quantum mechanical charge field molecular dynamics (QMCF MD) has been applied in conjunction with experimental large angle X-ray scattering (LAXS) and EXAFS measurements to study structure and dynamics of the hydrated oxo chloro anions chlorite, ClO2(-), chlorate, ClO3(-), and perchlorate, ClO4(-). In addition, the structures of the hydrated hypochlorite, ClO(-), bromate, ...

Thermodynamic Properties of Oxidized Forms of Chloride and Applications to the Phoenix Surface Chemistry

Introduction: the recent discovery of perchlorates (ClO4) by Phoenix triggered a high interest for this rare ion on the surface of the Earth [1]. Indeeed perchlorate solutions have very low eutectic favoring potential liquid water on the surface [2]. The mechanisms by which such a highly oxidized ion formed remain largely unknown. Two major pathways are possible: atmospheric oxidation of aeroso...

Purification and characterization of (per)chlorate reductase from the chlorate-respiring strain GR-1.

Strain GR-1 is one of several recently isolated bacterial species that are able to respire by using chlorate or perchlorate as the terminal electron acceptor. The organism performs a complete reduction of chlorate or perchlorate to chloride and oxygen, with the intermediate formation of chlorite. This study describes the purification and characterization of the key enzyme of the reductive pathw...

Hydrogen-based, hollow-fiber membrane biofilm reactor for reduction of perchlorate and other oxidized contaminants.

Many oxidized pollutants, such as nitrate, perchlorate, bromate, and chlorinated solvents, can be microbially reduced to less toxic or less soluble forms. For drinking water treatment, an electron donor must be added. Hydrogen is an ideal electron donor, as it is non-toxic, inexpensive, and sparsely soluble. We tested a hydrogen-based, hollow-fiber membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) for reduction ...

Large variations in the propensity of aqueous oxychlorine anions for the solution/vapor interface.

Core-level photoelectron spectroscopy measurements have been performed of aqueous solutions of NaCl codissolved with NaClO(n) (n=1-4). Each species has a distinct Cl 2p electron binding energy, which can be exploited for depth-profiling experiments to study the competition between Cl(-) and ClO(n)(-) anions for residing in the outermost layers of the solution/vapor interface. Strongest propensi...
